Advanced WordPress Speed Optimisation Techniques

Beyond the basics — advanced techniques for making your WordPress site exceptionally fast.

Most guides to WordPress speed cover the fundamentals: install a caching plugin, optimise images, use a CDN. These are valuable but they represent only the entry level of WordPress performance optimisation. This guide goes further, exploring advanced techniques that take a well-optimised WordPress site to genuinely exceptional performance — the kind that scores 95+ on Google PageSpeed Insights and loads in under one second on fast connections.

Object caching with Redis or Memcached is one of the most impactful advanced optimisations available for WordPress. Standard caching saves the final HTML output of pages. Object caching saves the results of expensive database queries in memory so they can be retrieved without hitting the database on subsequent requests. For sites with significant dynamic content — membership sites, WooCommerce stores, sites with complex queries — object caching can reduce server response times by 50-80%.

Critical CSS generation and inlining eliminates render-blocking CSS — one of the most common causes of poor Largest Contentful Paint scores. Rather than loading the entire stylesheet before any content is rendered, critical CSS inlining identifies the minimal CSS required to render the above-the-fold content and inlines it directly in the HTML head, deferring the rest of the stylesheet to load asynchronously. Tools like WP Rocket can automate this process.

Database query optimisation is an area often overlooked by non-developers. As WordPress sites grow, databases accumulate poorly performing queries: unindexed meta queries, large JOIN operations, and repeated queries that should be cached. Tools like Query Monitor reveal every database query executed during page load, their execution time, and which plugin or theme code triggered them. Identifying and optimising the slowest queries can significantly improve TTFB.

WordPress's autoloaded options table is a common hidden performance issue. Every plugin you have ever installed may have added data to the wp_options table with autoload=yes, meaning it is loaded on every page request regardless of whether it is needed. The autoloaded data should ideally be under 1MB; many neglected WordPress sites have several MB, adding significant overhead to every single page load.

HTTP/2 server push allows the server to proactively send resources to the browser before it has even requested them. For critical CSS, fonts, and key JavaScript files, server push can eliminate additional round trips by delivering these resources alongside the initial HTML. This requires server-level configuration in Nginx or Apache and careful implementation to avoid pushing resources the browser already has cached from a previous visit.

WebP and AVIF image formats offer significant file size reductions compared to JPEG and PNG without visible quality loss. WebP provides approximately 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at equivalent quality; AVIF provides a further 20-50% reduction over WebP. WordPress 5.8+ includes native WebP support, and AVIF support is available through plugin or server-side conversion. Implementing next-generation image formats can reduce total page weight dramatically.

JavaScript optimisation beyond simple minification involves techniques like code splitting, tree shaking, and deferred parsing. Many WordPress themes and plugins load large JavaScript bundles on every page regardless of whether that page uses the functionality those scripts provide. Auditing JavaScript payloads, identifying unused code, and deferring or eliminating non-critical scripts can shave hundreds of milliseconds from interactive time, particularly on mobile devices.

Prefetching and preloading are browser hints that allow you to give the browser advance notice about resources it will need. The rel=preload attribute tells the browser to fetch a resource immediately because it will be needed shortly. The rel=prefetch attribute tells the browser to fetch a resource in its idle time because it may be needed soon. Used carefully, these hints can make navigation feel instantaneous by eliminating wait times for predictable resource requests.

Monitoring performance continuously with automated tools ensures that optimisations are maintained and regressions are caught quickly. Tools like SpeedCurve or the free WebPageTest API can run automated performance tests on a schedule and alert you when scores fall below defined thresholds. Integrating performance checks into your deployment pipeline ensures that every code change is automatically tested for performance regressions before it goes live.
