WordPress is the world's most popular content management system, powering over 43% of all websites on the internet. From personal blogs to multinational corporate sites, from small business brochure websites to complex e-commerce platforms, WordPress is the tool of choice for an extraordinarily diverse range of web projects. Its combination of flexibility, ease of use, and a vast ecosystem of themes and plugins makes it the natural starting point for building a website.

It is important to understand the distinction between WordPress.com and WordPress.org. WordPress.com is a hosted service where WordPress manages hosting, updates, and security for you — simpler to start with but with significant limitations on customisation and plugin availability. WordPress.org is the self-hosted option where you download the software and install it on your own hosting account, giving you complete control and access to the full power of WordPress.

Getting started with self-hosted WordPress requires three things: a domain name, web hosting, and the WordPress software itself. Many web hosting providers offer one-click WordPress installation, making the technical setup straightforward. Managed WordPress hosting providers like Kinsta, WP Engine, and SiteGround offer optimised environments with automated updates, backups, and security measures included as standard.

The WordPress dashboard is the administration interface through which you manage everything about your website. The left-hand navigation menu gives access to all sections: Posts for blog content, Pages for static pages, Media for images and files, Appearance for themes and customisation, Plugins for adding functionality, and Settings for site configuration. Spending time exploring all sections at the start saves considerable time later.

Themes control the visual design of your WordPress site. WordPress.org hosts thousands of free themes in its official directory, and premium themes are available from marketplaces like ThemeForest. When choosing a theme, consider its visual match with your brand, how frequently it is updated, the quality of its support, its performance characteristics, and its compatibility with your chosen page builder.

Page builders are plugins that add visual drag-and-drop editing capabilities to WordPress, making it possible to build complex, custom-looking page layouts without coding. Elementor is the most popular page builder, with both a free and a powerful Pro version. The WordPress block editor, included in WordPress core, has evolved into a capable visual builder in its own right and is worth exploring before installing a third-party builder.

Plugins extend WordPress functionality, turning it into almost anything you need. Essential plugins for most WordPress sites include an SEO plugin, a caching plugin for performance, a security plugin, a backup plugin, and optionally WooCommerce for e-commerce. The key principle is to use only the plugins you actually need — plugin bloat is a common cause of WordPress performance and security issues.

WordPress security requires proactive attention. Its popularity makes it a prime target for automated attacks. Essential security measures include keeping everything updated, using strong unique passwords and two-factor authentication for all admin accounts, using a security plugin that provides firewall protection and malware scanning, and ensuring your hosting provider takes security seriously.

Backups are your most important insurance policy for any WordPress site. Regular, automated backups stored offsite allow you to restore your site to a known good state quickly if anything goes wrong. Tools like UpdraftPlus make automated offsite backup straightforward. Test your backups periodically by actually restoring them — a backup you have never tested is a backup you cannot trust.

The WordPress community is one of its greatest assets. WordPress is open source, developed and maintained by a global community of thousands of developers and designers. This community produces extensive documentation, thousands of tutorials, active support forums, and regular WordCamp conferences worldwide. Whatever question you have about WordPress, someone has answered it publicly and accessibly.
