Website Speed Optimisation: The Complete Guide

A slow website costs you customers, rankings, and revenue. Here is everything you need to know about making it fast.

Website speed is one of the most critical factors in digital success, yet it remains one of the most frequently neglected. Research from Google shows that as page load time increases from one second to ten seconds, the probability of a mobile site visitor bouncing increases by 123%. Amazon famously calculated that a one-second improvement in page load time results in a 1% increase in revenue. For any business with an online presence, site speed is a direct revenue lever.

Before optimising, you need to measure. Several free tools allow you to assess your website's current speed and identify specific issues. Google PageSpeed Insights analyses both mobile and desktop performance, providing a score out of 100 and specific recommendations. GTmetrix offers waterfall charts showing exactly which resources are loading and how long each takes. These tools should be your starting point for any speed optimisation project.

Image optimisation is typically the single highest-impact improvement you can make to a website's performance. Images often account for 50-80% of a webpage's total file size. The key optimisation steps are: using modern formats like WebP, compressing images to the minimum quality that still looks good, resizing images to their actual display dimensions, and implementing lazy loading so images below the fold only load as the user scrolls.

Caching allows browsers and servers to store copies of website resources so they do not have to be downloaded again on repeat visits. Browser caching is controlled by cache-control headers and can dramatically speed up repeat visits. Server-side caching, implemented through plugins like WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache in WordPress, generates static HTML versions of dynamic pages, eliminating the time-consuming process of building pages from scratch on each request.

Minification and compression of code files significantly reduces their file size. Minification removes whitespace, comments, and unnecessary characters from CSS, JavaScript, and HTML files. Gzip or Brotli compression, applied at the server level, compresses files before sending them to the browser. A minified and Brotli-compressed JavaScript file can be 60-80% smaller than its original, unoptimised version.

JavaScript is often the biggest performance villain on modern websites. Heavy JavaScript frameworks, large third-party scripts, and poorly written code can all block page rendering. Best practices include deferring non-critical JavaScript so it loads after the main page content, removing unused JavaScript, and auditing third-party scripts ruthlessly — analytics, chat widgets, and advertising pixels can add significant weight.

Core Web Vitals are Google's set of standardised metrics for measuring page experience, and they directly affect search rankings. Largest Contentful Paint measures loading performance. First Input Delay measures interactivity. Cumulative Layout Shift measures visual stability. Achieving good scores on all three metrics is the target for any performance-focused website that wants to rank well in competitive searches.

Web fonts can significantly impact loading performance. Each font file that must be downloaded before text can be displayed adds latency. Best practices include using a maximum of two font families, loading only the weights and styles you actually use, and using font-display:swap to show fallback fonts while custom fonts load, preventing invisible text during the loading process.

Hosting quality has an enormous impact on website speed that is often overlooked. Shared hosting — where your website shares server resources with hundreds of other websites — can result in slow response times, especially during peak traffic periods. Moving to managed WordPress hosting or a VPS with dedicated resources can provide dramatic, immediate performance improvements. Server response time should ideally be under 200 milliseconds.

Performance optimisation is an ongoing discipline, not a one-time project. Websites accumulate new plugins, scripts, images, and content over time, and each addition can degrade performance if not managed carefully. Establishing a performance budget and testing against it regularly keeps performance from degrading gradually. Monthly performance audits and automated performance testing in your development pipeline are the foundations of a consistently fast website.
