Google Search Console: The Complete Guide for Website Owners

Google Search Console is one of the most powerful free SEO tools available. Here is how to use it fully.

Google Search Console (GSC) is a free tool provided by Google that gives website owners direct visibility into how Google sees, crawls, and indexes their website. Unlike Google Analytics which measures what happens after users arrive on your site, Search Console focuses on what happens before — your visibility in Google Search, how your pages are being indexed, and any technical issues that might be preventing your site from performing at its best in search results.

Setting up Google Search Console requires verifying ownership of your website. Several verification methods are available: adding an HTML tag to your site's head, uploading an HTML file to your server, adding a DNS TXT record, or using your Google Analytics connection. Once verified, GSC begins collecting data about your site's search performance, which is typically available within 24-48 hours of verification.

The Performance report is the most frequently consulted section of Search Console. It shows how many times your site appeared in search results (Impressions), how many times users clicked through (Clicks), your average position, and your Click-Through Rate. You can filter by date range, search type, country, device, and specific pages or queries. This data is invaluable for identifying which keywords are driving traffic and which have high impressions but low CTR.

The URL Inspection tool allows you to check the indexed status of any specific URL on your website. It shows whether the page is indexed, the last time Googlebot crawled it, what version of the page Google has cached, and any issues detected during crawling. You can also request indexing for new or updated pages directly from the URL Inspection tool — useful when you have published important content and want Google to discover it quickly.

The Coverage report shows which pages on your site are indexed, which are excluded, and why. Indexed pages appear in Valid status. Excluded pages are categorised by reason: Crawled but currently not indexed, Discovered but not yet crawled, noindex pages intentionally excluded, and Error pages prevented by technical issues. Regularly reviewing the Coverage report identifies indexing problems that might be preventing important content from appearing in search.

Core Web Vitals in Search Console provides a page-level breakdown of how your site performs on Google's user experience metrics. Pages are categorised as Good, Needs Improvement, or Poor for both mobile and desktop. This report shows which specific pages have issues and what type of issue is affecting them, enabling targeted optimisation efforts focused on the pages that most need attention.

The Sitemaps section allows you to submit XML sitemaps to Google, helping it discover and prioritise crawling of your site's important pages. GSC shows when sitemaps were last read, how many URLs were discovered, and whether any errors were encountered when processing the sitemap. Maintaining accurate, up-to-date sitemaps and monitoring their processing status is basic but important SEO hygiene.

The Links report provides valuable insight into your site's link profile. External Links shows which sites are linking to yours and which of your pages they are linking to — useful for understanding your link building progress and identifying unexpected inbound links. Internal Links shows Google's view of how your site's pages are linked internally, helping you verify that your internal linking strategy is directing link equity to your most important pages.

Manual Actions notifications alert you if Google has applied a manual penalty to your site — a human-reviewed determination that your site violates Google's Webmaster Guidelines. Manual actions can result in significant ranking reductions or complete removal from search results. Common manual actions include unnatural links, thin content, cloaking, and user-generated spam. Resolving the underlying issue before submitting a reconsideration request is critical.

Search Console data has a 16-month retention limit. Exporting Search Console data regularly — to Google Sheets via the Data Studio connector or through direct API access — allows you to maintain a longer historical record for trend analysis. Comparing year-over-year performance, tracking the impact of algorithm updates, and measuring the long-term results of SEO campaigns all benefit from having data beyond the 16-month GSC retention window.
